Tamlayan eki: -(n)In > attached to the possessor (Genitive Suffix)
İyelik eki: -(s)I > attached to the possessee (Possessive
Suffix)
Bileşik isimler (Compounds) > lack the
Genitive Suffix
Ø Meaningwise, not necessarily a possession-relation
duvar
saat-i, kabak dolma-sı, Boğaziçi Üniversite-si, konuşma ders-i
What if we have a possessee that is, at the
same time, a possessor?
è We require both suffixes
Örneğin: Özge’s mother’s friend / the friend
of Özge’s mother
Özge-nin anne-si à Possessor = Özge, possessee = anne
[Özge-nin
anne-si]-nin arkadaş-ı à Possessor = Özge’nin annesi, possessee = arkadaş
What happens if we also have a case suffix? (other
than getting tired of suffixation?)
e.g. [the friend of
Özge’s mother] is beautiful.
[[Özge-nin anne-si]-nin] arkadaşı güzel.
>> Subject position – no overt case marker
e.g. I don’t like
[the friend of Özge’s mother]
like = hoşlanmak à requires Ablative (-DAn)
Ben [[Özge-nin
anne-si]-nin arkadaş-ı]-ndan
hoşlanmıyorum.
-
The internal structure of the
possessive construction remains the same.
-
The case suffix is attached to the
final position.
-
If the possessive construction
occupies the subject position in the sentence, no case suffix is added. (Thank
God!)
Ø Whenever the possessive suffix (-sI) is followed by a case marker, a
‘kaynaştırma harfi’ n occurs after
–sI, irrespective of whether the case marker starts with a consonant or a
vowel.
